Being frank about privacy

Short version: we count visits so we know what's useful, we never sell or share anything, and we don't follow you around. Below is the slightly longer version.

What we count when you visit

When you look at a page, open one of our PDFs, click a link that leaves our site, or send us a message through the contact form, we note it. Along with that, we keep:

  • which page or PDF it was, and roughly when
  • where you came from, if your browser tells us (say, our newsletter or a search engine)
  • your browser, operating system, and whether you're on a phone or a computer
  • your approximate city and country, worked out from your internet connection

This helps us see which resources people find useful and which talks and events sent folks our way. We keep these counts over time so we can spot trends, but they don't identify you.

What we don't do

  • No tracking cookies. We don't put anything on your device to recognize you.
  • No following you around. To tell one visit from another on a given day, we scramble your internet address and browser into an anonymous code. That code changes every day, can't be turned back into your address, and we never store the address itself.
  • No ads, no selling, no sharing. Nobody else gets this information except our web host, Cloudflare, who stores it for us.
  • No third-party trackers. No Google Analytics, no social media pixels.

One tiny exception

Sometimes we share links with a little tag on the end, like ?ref=a-conference-name, so we know which event a visit came from. If you arrive through one of those, your browser tab remembers the tag until you close it, so the rest of that visit counts toward the same event. It's forgotten when the tab is closed.

If you send us a message

The contact form sends us your name, email, and message. We keep them so we can write back. If you'd like us to delete them, just ask.

Questions?

We're happy to talk about this (it's literally in our name). Email us at [email protected].
