About Alia

Hi, I’m Alia! I am passionate about digging into understanding – within oneself and amongst others – to provoke change and get to impact faster. My experience comes from my varied and rewarding career journey.

I am an engineer and entrepreneur I started out as a software engineer, passionate about problem-solving. From there, I opened an agency building e-commerce sites for small publishers, and ventured further into entrepreneurship by launching a successful real-time photo-sharing product which partnered with the likes of Brides Magazine and the Clinton Global Initiative.

I am a coach and a team manager My passion for working with teams eventually led me to coaching at Spotify, where I coached and grew leaders and teams who changed the face of the music industry. The ever-changing, fast-paced environment (I helped grow an organization from 40 to over 450 people) shaped me into a strong senior leader and taught me to manage, grow, and nourish my own team.

Through this varied journey, my focus has been on learning, curiosity, and shoveling the surface away in order to gain a deep understanding of the human experience.

I am a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach (CPCC), trained through the Co-Active Training Institute. I’ve studied Problem Solving Leadership with Esther Derby and Don Gray, the Satir Growth Model at UNC Satir Institute in the School of Social Work with Jean McLendon, and Crucial Conversations with Crucial Learning. With Fiona, I created a career framework for Agile Coaches at Spotify. Also, if you’re into brain science, ask me about my neuroscience side studies.

I’m based in the Hudson Valley, New York, willing to travel, and am an expert in remote coaching and facilitation. In my free time, I’m an avid woodworker, second-rate gardener, obsessive cooker of foods, and lover of the outdoors.

About Fiona

Welcome!

Being an effective leader is rooted in being authentic, self-aware, and inclusive. The journey to effective leadership is different for everyone and it’s unlocked through experience and self-discovery. I love to help people find and define their own path.

I am an enabler and a generalist I began my career in operations and delivery roles with Lonely Planet. It was here that I honed my systems thinking and people-first leadership skills as I built effective teams, managed digital projects, and discovered the joy of helping people and teams connect and work effectively together. After a stint at Luna Tractor helping teams with agile transformations I moved across the world from Australia to the US – a jump into the unknown!

I am a coach and a leader It was at Spotify that I found my love of enabling and growing leaders. I saw how the power of a well-placed question or observation could unlock a team. I managed coaches and engineering managers, facilitated the right conversations, and built a high-performing senior leadership team in a large Platform Engineering organization (for a period, leading a cross-functional organization of 130 people). Through this work I gained the skills and experience in coaching leaders and teams to be effective, resilient, and adaptable in an environment of fast-paced growth and change.

The through-line of my approach is to be endlessly curious about how and why things are. What is driving this behavior? Why is this thing hard to say? What purpose does this have? How can we work with this to get the outcome that we want? Helping people disentangle themselves from beliefs and assumptions to connect to the heart of the matter brings me joy.

I hold a Graduate Certificate in Psychology: Coaching and Counseling from Deakin University. I have trained in Problem Solving Leadership with Esther Derby and Don Gray. I am a certified Professional Integral Coach and am working towards certification with the International Coaching Federation. With Alia, I created a career framework for Agile Coaches at Spotify.

I’m based in NYC, willing to travel, and am an expert in remote coaching and facilitation. When I’m not coaching, I love to get outside. I travel regularly and can often be found biking, paddling, hiking, or cross-country skiing. My personal motto is: Leave it better than you found it. Feel free to ask me about ADHD, life as an expat, or gut-renovating an apartment in NYC.
